PROSPECT BATHROOMS

Two vibrant and cheerful bathrooms designed for aging in place parents.
Woodside, CA

The Prospect bathrooms were thoughtfully designed with aging in place in mind, ensuring both functionality and style. The full bathroom features beautiful Fireclay tiles in the shower and behind the vanity, complemented by a foldable bench seat and large-format floor tiles. A zero-threshold shower enhances accessibility, making it ADA-compliant and perfect for long-term usability. The half bathroom, on the other hand, is a vibrant, playful space with bright yellow tiles, sleek black fixtures, and a modern pendant light that adds a touch of sophistication. Skylights and strategically placed windows flood both spaces with natural light, creating a welcoming and uplifting atmosphere.

I want bathrooms that feel timeless but also have a playful atmosphere. Accessibility is really important to me now that I’m older, but I still want some fun design elements—things like paint or accessories that I can easily switch out over time to keep it feeling fresh.

WORDS FROM THE DESIGNER

I’m Carrie, the founder of Inspired ADUs, and this ADU was designed for my mom. Creating something fresh and timeless for her was a special project close to my heart. Both bathrooms are contemporary and tailored to her personal style, combining practicality with thoughtful design. In the larger bathroom, I used large-format, high-friction tiles to ensure safety and prevent slipping. The shower is simple yet elegant, featuring blue Fireclay tiles, brushed nickel Moen fixtures, including both a handheld and a regular showerhead, and a bamboo foldable bench seat for added comfort. We included a curbless shower for easy accessibility and a towel drying rack to keep her towels warm and cozy. For the second bathroom, I wanted something playful and fun. I chose small-format marble tiles for the floor and added a vibrant pop of color with bright yellow tiles behind the vanity, paired with yellow paint and a sleek grey floating vanity. To make both spaces functional and convenient, I added motion-sensor lighting under the vanities, perfect for aging eyes. To keep the bathrooms feeling fresh and sophisticated, I incorporated modern asymmetrical light fixtures and added skylights and windows to flood the spaces with natural light. These bathrooms are a balance of playfulness, elegance, and practicality—designed with my mom’s comfort and style in mind.
